Queens Birthday Long Weekend Road Trip | Phil Gilbert Hyundai
When a long weekend comes along though, it’s important to get out and about. With the Queen’s Birthday celebrations just around the corner, it’s time to take advantage of our smooth-running Hyundais and explore a new destination. Here are a few on-road adventures and road trips that you can enjoy this June long weekend.
Hit the Snowfields
The Queen’s Birthday signifies the start of the snowfield season in NSW, so why not take advantage of these few days to hit the slopes? New South Wales boasts the highest mountain and best skiing in Australia. Mt Kosciusko can give you everything from downhill to cross-country, snowboarding and tobogganing. The ski fields are an easy five-hour drive from Sydney, and only two from Canberra, so it’s the perfect way to spend your long weekend.
The Blue Mountains
The Greater Blue Mountains Drive offers an “edge of the world” drive around the cliffs between Katoomba and Wentworth. There are 18 discovery trails that branch off the main route for endless adventures. You can also get out of the car and go for hikes through the Botanic Garden at Mt Tomah, or check out the amazing limestone rocks at Jenolan Caves. Check out the cool, artsy villages of Leura and Katoomba while you’re at it.
The Grand Pacific Drive
An incredibly iconic highway, the Grand Pacific Drive is a great way to cruise around for the Queen’s Birthday. You’ll coast along the south of Sydney for up to 140 kilometres, hugging the lovely Pacific Ocean as you go. The drive offers up lovely isolated beaches, sweet towns, a Buddhist temple, and the mighty Sea Cliff Bridge. Stop along towns like Austinmer, Shellharbour and Kiama as you go.
The Hunter Valley
They call it Tuscany in Australia, and it’s not hard to see why. Enjoy a truly classy weekend of vineyards and cheese plates, B&B’s and gourmet tastings, parachuting and hot air ballooning. Cessnock, the town before the Hunter Valley region, is only a two and a half hour drive from the North of Sydney. Other notable towns are Pokolbin and Wollombi, which sit among beautiful rolling hills and colonial buildings.
