How Do I Know it’s Time for an Oil Change? | Phil Gilbert Hyundai
Regular vehicle maintenance is the most important aspect of keeping our cars on the road. When it comes to oil, it is usually recommended that you get this changed every 5000 to 7500 kilometres to ensure a smooth and effective ride. After all, the oil is essentially the lifeblood of your vehicle. It contributes to an efficient engine and reduces the amount of heat, varnish and carbon that collects on the engine. Over time, the oil changes from a smooth liquid to more of a sludge, which is why it needs to be changed. Read on to see some signs that your car’s oil needs a change.
It’s Been a While
If you truly cannot remember the last time you had an oil change, it was probably too long ago. Maintaining a regular schedule is very important to the healthy functioning of your vehicle.
Sludgy Oil
If you take a look under the hood and notice that your oil has become black, thick and gritty, then it’s time for a change.
Oil darkens rather quickly due to constantly working to pull heat away from the engine. If you start to notice some particles mixed in with the oil, it needs to be changed or else you risk it’s overloading the filter, missing contaminants and blocking the engine.
An Overly Loud Engine
Has your engine been running louder than usual? This means that your engine’s inner workings could be rubbing and grinding together without oil to do the job of lubricating everything. As always, ignoring this problem could lead to more problems. The best course of action is to book in for a service and have your mechanic diagnose the problem – chances are it’s an oil issue.
Your Check Engine Light is on
Most new cars these days have an oil gauge, but older ones don’t. So if you find that your check engine light just won’t go away, you might just need an oil change. Again, this one could take some troubleshooting, so always start by talking to a professional to diagnose the problem.
