Does My Hyundai Need a Pollen Filter?

Typically hidden under the dashboard or behind the glove compartment, pollen filters (also known as cabin filters) are in virtually every vehicle built over the past couple of decades. Pollen filters are often confused with engine air filters, but they perform an entirely different and equally important. Pollen filters are designed to remove contaminants from the air that circulates inside your vehicle's cabin.

How a Pollen Filter Works

Pollen filters are a key component of your car’s ventilation system and helps ensure proper ventilation system function and the health and safety of all passengers. It works like a kitchen sieve, removing pollutants from the air that comes in through the ventilation system and circulates throughout the cabin, ensuring:

●     Airborne dust and pollen are removed from inside the vehicle

●     Improved heating and air conditioning performance

●     Reduced allergy related problems

●     Cleaner air in the vehicle cabin

With a proper filter, the air inside the cabin can have higher levels of harmful and odorous exhaust gases than the air outside of the cabin. This is because other vehicles on the road leave tunnels of exhaust fumes in their wake. Pollen filters remove these gases from the air before they enter the cabin.

Pollen Filters are Also Important for Engine Function

Pollutants caught by the filter also prevents pollutants causing problems inside the engine, fuel and exhaust systems. Pollutants can cause blockages in the fuel systems and the engine over time, causing certain components to grind together or overheat. However, ill maintained pollen filters can also cause engine issues.

Blocked pollen filters can cause overheating as they have caught so much debris that oxygen can’t get through. Dirty, contaminated air will restrict airflow and force your vehicle’s ventilation system to work harder. This causes your air conditioner to operate less efficiently, reducing your vehicle’s horsepower. This is why they need to be removed and cleaned or replaced by a new filter when necessary.

Maintaining and Replacing Pollen Filters

Pollen filters require replacing every 15 to 30,000kms. Some models have it as part of their scheduled servicing. You can check your filters for signs of damage by removing them, cleaning them and looking for holes or evidence of wear. If you notice any issues, it’s a good idea to get a new filter instead of putting the damaged one back.

The best pollen filters on the market help find the perfect balance between stopping pollutants entering your car’s system and allowing enough air in for cooling. You can also buy performance filters that allow even more air into the inlet system than a traditional filter. This can help your car generate even more power from your engine as it can operate faster and at a cooler temperature.
